Anna Newell Jones Some people are very fortunate to have great neighbors that they interact with every day. I happen to be lucky in that area. There are for owners in my particular area of the building, and we all like each other and get along really good.

But sometimes, taking in the broad vistas, mountain peaks, and shimmering deserts, we forget that these places were once teeming with wildlife. The river valleys where we built our towns were rich ecosystems that fed vast herds of deer and elk.

Today, wildlife depends on the places we choose to keep wild, but few of these are the sanctuaries they seem to be. Stop for a moment and look over your back fence. Look to the landscape, and then look closer.

The bears and bobcats, lions and coyotes are your neighbors too. Even though they are relentlessly hunted, trapped, snared and poisoned, scientists have little idea of how many there are or what natural pressures they face every day.

The sad thing is that most Nevadans are surprised to hear that trophy hunting is allowed — even encouraged — in Nevada, and that wild animals are still trapped here for their fur. Perhaps even more important, few Nevadans know that these carnivores provide real benefits for people and ecosystems, from native plants to mountain bluebirds… to us.
